A quick reminder: as well as helping me by 'liking’ this post via the heart below, this is your very last chance to get a year’s paid subscription for this newsletter by buying a paperback copy of my latest book, Unshrinking, in the US, by the end of the day. Just send the receipt to kate.manne@gmail.com. Thanks for your support for my writing.

Welcome! There are a lot of new readers here, thanks to my posting blitz this week (I usually post biweekly). So I thought I’d celebrate, and thank those of you who’ve picked up a paperback copy of Unshrinking, by doing a little old-fashioned AMA. You asked me so many good questions that this is going to have to be a two-parter.

Why is this newsletter called More to Hate?

It’s not—or not just—about wanting to write about things that are detestable, depressing, and infuriating, from an intersectional feminist perspective. The name was originally an inversion of the idea of “more to love” that is the way some fat people try to defend themselves against the sexual fatphobia that I wrote about in Unshrinking, and that I’ve spent a lot of time facing. The idea that fatness made me a target for misogynistic hatred online was part of the premise of the book—together with the way that it made me shrink from public view, even when opportunities to fight the battles I cared about most presented themselves. I felt too fat to be a feminist in public. Despite my avid belief that you cannot tackle misogyny without also standing up to fatphobia—and that body politics and electoral politics are deeply entangled. Living in line with my beliefs took my writing a book to even begin to manage.

Are you even fat (anymore)?
