Bringing Home Babies

The first installment of a regular new feature: “Growing to Love,” about all of the joy as well as the heartache of being a person in the world.

Yesterday, we brought home two beautiful Siamese kittens—affectionately known as “Meezers”—that we’d been preparing to adopt for over a month. I had a vivid if faint echo of that feeling I had when we brought my daughter home from the hospital six and a half years ago: anxious, unequal to the task, and utterly ill-equipped for what would come next. And what came next was indeed surprising.
