Recently The New York Times published an essay that is marketed as a love story. “At 66, He’s Finally the Husband of My Dreams,” reads the headline. The author, Helen Schulman, says she has always loved her husband. But finally, after thirty years, their relationship has hit its zenith: “I definitely hate him less,” writes Schulman, mock triumphantly, detailing such marital bliss as enjoying a drink he’s prepared for her and having conversations.

Meanwhile, her piece details the following facts, which we are supposed to find amusing and not, say, sad, infuriating, and alarming by turns:
