Thank you for sharing both the highs and lows. We're cheering for you. This is a long, hard, important fight. Your negative experiences (which I wish you didn't have) are such a sad reminder of how much work there is to do.

I finished Unshrinking in 2 sittings. It was so wonderful and will be declaring it my next book club read and having my parents/partner/friends/random acquaintances read it. Thank you so much for putting this into the world. It simultaneously made me feel seen and opened my eyes.

Whew, what a whirlwind for you. With some very unpleasant people, it sounds like.

I devoured Unshrinking. I've read a LOT of books about fatness and fat liberation, and I don't think anyone has quite come at the philosophy of it the way that you have (I mean, you're a philosopher so it makes sense lol), and I found that exhilarating. So many books feel like "Fatphobia 101" or "Fat Liberation 101" and there is 100% a place for that! People need those books. But I don't anymore, so it's nice to see a leveled-up fat liberation book, and I think that's what this is. I know I'm going to be thinking about Unshrinking for a long time, and I also know that my therapist and I are going to talk about it (she's a fat liberation/fat acceptance/HAES practitioner) in only good ways. In ways about how it's helped me. So thank you. Thank you so much. I have urged my library friends to purchase it for their libraries, and I have urged my reading friends to read it.

I can't wait to read my copy, which is arriving soon. And also--thank you for sharing the highs and the lows--like others have written, I'm so sorry that they exist and that you have to absorb/deflect them, and yet sharing them openly helps others see how vulnerable it is to put something out in the world and how women, especially (that philosopher on twitter! just...no) are treated when sharing with the public world. We can only stop it when we are open about it and seeing it, you know? Sending so many good wishes for the rest of the book events! 💜

Just finished reading the book this morning- loved it, and learned a lot. Up until the NYT published something about an obesity conference where the attendees were saying, "yeah, we don't know why this happens," I had been a calories in, calories burned, kind of person. I had no idea it was so complicated. Bodies are nuts, aren't they? They can be so strong and resilient, and also so sensitive to the strangest things. Some of the medical "professionals" profiled should look for a new line of work.

Thanks for a great read.

What a whirlwind you’ve had! I’m so sorry about the lows. And I’m so looking forward to reading Unshrinking.

What’s been so wild to me, in reading the pieces you’ve shared so far, is how similar the body-policing/harassment you experienced was to my own experience as a flat-chested girl/young woman in middle school, high school, and college - like, the whole idea that I should feel grateful for any attention and couldn’t possibly be harassed because who would even be interested in me with my lack of boobs? It’s just so startling to realize how VERY narrow the space of “publicly desirable” female bodies is and how much misogyny polices our bodies.

I preordered the book and then it got locked in my frozen mailbox for a week! (I just freed it yesterday.) I’ve been so looking forward to the book, it was torture knowing it was here but inaccessible. Seems like there’s a good metaphor in there. 😂
