Where’s all the outcry about this from the transphobic “activists” who want to prevent bodily “mutilation”? Bariatric surgeries are increasingly being pushed on children as well, yet we haven’t heard a peep from that crowd. It’s almost as though their “concern” isn’t actually about the health of patients. . .
Thank you so much for all your reporting on this, and for the in-depth research! My heart breaks for all the people who were coerced into these dangerous surgeries, and who knows how many more will end up suffering? 😥
One of the pioneers of bariatric surgery, Henry Buchwald, is still alive and well in the Twin Cities (where he developed many of those techniques at the University of Minnesota medical school). I'm not aware that he's commented on any of the recent negative findings and developments, are you? I'd be interested to hear his thoughts - or a really good interview!

So powerful to read about these systemic abuses against fat bodies. So cruel. Thank you for writing into these horrors, Kate.
Nauseating information but no surprising when money and power are there.
Thank you so much.
Your work is great and important. I admire you and your work very much. [reader from Switzerland]
I wish I was shocked. I am so sad for all the people who feel pushed into this.
This is heartbreaking and nauseating to read. But wholly unsurprising.
Great article about an appalling situation.

This is so awful. Thank you for writing!
Horrific
I didn’t know bariatric surgery could lead to post-surgical complications in 1/3 of cases. Reading about this feels a little like reading body horror.

A good commentary on the medical system. Here is another one that is super interesting https://crankyoldlady.substack.com/p/philosopher-illogic?utm_source=profile&utm_medium=reader2
